Five years ago, Ukraine’s presidential elections captured the imagination as Viktor Yushchenko emerged triumphant.

В воскресенье украинцы голосуют в других обстоятельствах - в отличие от 2004г. Мистеру Ющенко не удалось обеспечить стабильность, побороть коррупцию или защитить граждан от бандитской бюрократии, что вызвало широкораспространенное разочарование.
On Sunday, Ukrainians vote in the first presidential election since 2004 and in very different circumstances from the Orange Revolution. Mr Yushchenko’s failure to create stability, fight corruption or protect citizens against a rapacious bureaucracy has created widespread disillusion.

Уныние усилилось экономическим кризисом, который вынудил Киев принять участие в программе МВФ.
The gloom is compounded by the economic crisis, which has forced Kiev into an International Monetary Fund rescue programme.

Despite the political chaos, the Orange Revolution’s legacy has survived in a free media, openness to the outside world, and multi-party competition. Despite constant Russian interference, Ukraine’s sense of identity as an independent state has grown. And, despite the economic crisis, Ukraine is a richer place than five years ago, with a better stock of housing, cars and consumer goods.

Но политический провал мистера Ющенко оставил избирателям выбор, достойный сожаления. У Ющенко нет шансов остаться на прежней должности. 2 претендента – Янукович и Тимошенко, которая раньше была союзником Ющенко – о теперь его яростный противник.
But Mr Yushchenko’s political failures have left voters with a lamentable electoral choice. He stands no chance of retaining office. The top contenders are Viktor Yanukovich, the opposition leader, and Yulia Tymoshenko, the prime minister, Mr Yushchenko’s 2004 ally but now his bitter rival.

Для Украины унизительно, что мистер Янукович, который во время кампании 2004 г был признан фальсификатором, не был выкинут из политики. Он остался вследствие циничной политической культуры и поддержке большого бизнесса. Даже мистер Ющенко имел с ним дело.
It is humiliating for Ukraine that Mr Yanukovich, whose 2004 presidential campaign was widely seen as fraudulent, has not been hounded out of politics. He has survived thanks to a cynical political culture and the backing of big business. Even Mr Yushchenko has done deals with him.

Миссис Тимошенко должна была бы быть более привлекательным выбором, благодаря уровню доверия со времен Помаранчевой революции. Но она оказалась бесстыдной оппортунисткой, а также разделяет вину с мистером Ющенко за развал Помаранчевых сил. Ее экономическая политика демонстрирует устрашающую любовь к популистким интервенция/действия, напр. произвольной сохранение цен (низких).
Ms Tymoshenko should, in principle, be a more attractive choice, given her Orange credentials. But she has proved herself shamelessly opportunistic and shares the blame with Mr Yushchenko for the failures of the Orange camp. Her economic policies show a unnerving penchant for populist intervention, eg with arbitrary price caps.

В международных делах оба претендента будут уравновешивать /налаживать связи с Россией, с медленным продвижением в сторону ЕС. Разницы между ними в этой области очень мало.
In international affairs, both would balance ties with Russia with a slow push for European Union integration. Not much to choose between Ms T and Mr Y on this score.

Итак, кто выиграет первый раунд, а в следующим месяце – второй? Учитывая недостатки кандитатов, избирателям следует сфокусироваться на главном. Ключевой момент сейчас – политическая ставильность. Только стабильная Украина сможет осуществить экономические реформы и выздоровление/восстановление. Миссис тимошенко – полная противоположность стабилизирующей силы. Мистер Янукович, несмотря на свои очевидные недостатки, может оказаться меньшим злом. Бедная Украина/Мы сожалеем, что Украина пришла к такому.
So, whom to back in Sunday’s first round and next month’s run-off? Given the candidates’ shortcomings, voters must focus on what is important. The key now is political stability. Only a stable Ukraine can achieve economic reform and recovery. Ms Tymoshenko is the polar opposite of a stabilising force. Mr Yanukovich, for all his manifest faults, may prove the lesser evil. Pity Ukraine that it has come to this.

I would not be so confident in the stability under Yanukovich presidency. It is not clear what is the basis of such editorial conclusions. I agree with the author of these comments that Ukraine is loosing the illusions of the fast democratic reform but we still believe that Ukrainians as citizens became more selfconfident and more market oriented that we have had 5 years ago. I am optimist about this elections and hope that Ukraine will show high level of free and fair elections. This is the most importat thing that we are waiting for. If we will have it we will have progress in future towards EU.

How it looks now from here? Actually - democratically (Orange-) thinking part of Ukraine really frustrated. They feel themselves dropped in a halfway. No one Orange initiative (NATO, EU, even visa regime with EU, etc.) was fulfilled. At the same time Eastern part is still with "Mr Y" - for all past 5 years. US should agree that they lost their "war" with Russia here. Even famous "RISK" game in Russian (licenced?) version carries "Russia" instead "Ukraine" on its map for this territory.

The thinking here in Ukraine seems to be that Tymoshenko is the only leader capable of removing both Yushchenko and Yanukovich permanently from the political scene, leaving the electorate to dump her as well in five years.

Political and national consolidation and stability will only arrive to Ukraine if the Eastern Oblasts (Donetsk, Luhansk and Crimea) join the Russian Federation, so the rest will strengthen its nationalist idea. Donetsk, Luhansk and Rostov can build a Donbas Republic inside the Russian Federation..
