Даже с вершины вулканического кратера такой вид можно наблюдать не часто. Одна причина этого – очень яркий Марс. Когда была сделана эта фотография, яркость Марса возрастала, приближаясь к максимальной за весь год величине. Марс – самый яркий объект на этой картинке, он находится слева вверху. Блеск Красной планеты достиг максимума на неделе перед снимком, когда произошло противостояние. В это время Земля и Марс, двигаясь по своим орбитам, были ближе всего друг к другу. В нижней части картинки видна редко встречающаяся лунная туманная радуга. Гораздо чаще можно наблюдать обычную радугу, которая возникает, когда солнечный свет преломляется в каплях дождя, действующих как маленькие призмы. Эта туманная радуга возникла при отражении лунного света маленькими капельками воды, образующими туман. Почти всегда туманные радуги выглядят белыми, однако в этом случае можно было наблюдать все цвета обычной радуги. Снимок был сделан с вершины огромного вулкана Халеакала на Гавайских островах в США.

A moonbow (also known as a lunar rainbow or white rainbow) is a rainbow that occurs at night. Moonbows are relatively faint, due to the smaller amount of light from the Moon. As with rainbows, they are in the opposite part of the sky from the moon. This picture was taken looking south, the bright star to the right is Achernar

"Weather in Patagonia is not very often clear. When I set up my camera under the rain and a totally covered sky, my intention was to make a time lapse movie of a Moon rainbow, known as Moonbow. I filmed this successfully in the second half of the night but what I was not expecting, at the end of the movie, was to keep sleeping in my tent next to the camera while the sun was already rising, showing also a nice classical rainbow of sunlight!"

Бі́ла ра́йдуга (тума́нна ра́йдуга, fogbow) — широка блискуча біла дуга на небосхилі, зумовлена розсіянням світла в дуже дрібних крапельках (радіусом близько 25 μ). Внутрішня сторона білої райдуги трохи забарвлена у фіолетовий колір, зовнішня — в оранжевий. Іноді білою райдугою невірно називають місячну райдугу.

A fog bow is similar to a rainbow, but because of the very small size of water droplets that cause fog, smaller than 0.05 mm, the fog bow has no colors and appears white. Fogbows are sometimes called "white rainbows" or "cloudbows". Mariners sometimes call them "sea-dogs."
Unlike a glory, which has multiple pale colored rings caused by diffraction, the fogbow is entirely white.
The fogbow's lack of colors is caused by the smaller water drops... so small that the quantum mechanical wavelength of light becomes important and smears out colors that would be created by larger rainbow water drops
